What are Pink pages?
Pink Pages is the list of "good" and "bad" websites, as voted by users of HakuHaku.
Websites are ranked according to the votes you have given. Pages you have not voted on are ranked according to the community's votes.
The goal of the voting system is to improve HakuHaku's search results for users, without requiring every user to vote on every website.
The name "pink pages" is a play on old phonebook yellow pages.
How Pink pages work?
HakuHaku users can vote up vote or down vote any website. Websites you like are moved to the top of the search results.
The Pink pages system collectes from all users and, based on majority vote, assigns websites with positive "high quality" or negative "low quality" mark.
However, in your own search results, your personal vote always overrides the pink pages rating.
Search results with Pink pages
Your search query returns a list of matching web pages from the search providers.
The results are then sorted into groups:
- Your upvoted sites
- Community upvoted sites
- Unranked sites
- Your downvoted sites
- Community downvoted sites
- Potentially harmful sites
Potentially harmful websites are pages flagged by HakuHaku staff that can be identified as harmful: scam websites and pages containing dangerous software.
Note: No websites are removed from the results with the pink page system.
Shortcomings and problems
The way Pink Pages modifies search results is not perfect and has room for improvement. For example, it is difficult to define how political content should be evaluated.
However, it currently significantly improves Finnish and local search results in particular, which are not well represented by the results provided by foreign search services.
The initial aim is to improve search results from the perspectives of user experience and Finnish customers, as well as to remove results that are clearly problematic from an information-security perspective.
