What are Pink pages?
Pink Pages is the list of "good" and "bad" websites, as voted by users of HakuHaku.
The websites you like, are ranked to the top of the page, and the pages you don't like are hidden to the bottom of the results.
The goal of the voting system is to improve the HakuHaku results for it's users.
The name "pink pages" is a play on old phonebook yellow pages.
How Pink pages work?
HakuHaku users can vote up vote or down vote any website. Websites you like are moved to the top of the search results.
The Pink pages system collectes from all users and, based on majority vote, assigns websites with positive "high quality" or negative "low quality" mark.
However, in your own search results, your personal vote always overrides the pink pages rating.
Search results with Pink pages
Your search query returns a list of matching web pages from the search providers.
The results are then sorted into groups:
- Your upvoted sites
- Community upvoted sites
- Unranked sites
- Your downvoted sites
- Community downvoted sites
- Potentially harmful sites
Websites that are easy to identify as harmful (scams, unwanted software installations) are flagged by HakuHaku staff or the pink pages moderators.
Note: No websites are removed from the results with the pink page system.
Shortcomings
Pink pages is currently useful in highly improving the search results for current user base of HakuHaku.
If the userbase and thus it's impact grow in the future, we recognise that the system should be built with public discourse and transparent decision making process.
Too slow process
As a new service, HakuHaku has a very limited user base. This means the voting process may take a long time, until enough users have encountered and voted the same websites in their search results.
Thus the HakuHaku staff and selected moderators have helped to pre-assign well known websites with pink pages ratings before a community vote has been established.
Once a website receives enough community votes for a resolution, it will override any pre-assigned rating.
